What does your heart have to do with leadership?

A few times this month I’ve heard the phrase

“… but my heart is in <this space>” or “my heart is with <this group>”.

And it makes me wonder - where is my heart?

Outside of family and dear friends,

my heart is with quiet, thoughtful leaders.

Often overlooked. Often overextended.  Often women.

I see their aspirations, dreams, hopes for a better world.

I sense their drive, determination, grit in moving, pushing, pulling ahead.

I feel their frustrations, hopelessness, loneliness when overcoming adversity.

I feel the weight of the armor they put on - every. single. day.

Why? Because I’ve been there, and I’m both fiercely protective and deeply committed to helping them lead on their own terms, without the armor.

I’ve sat in a new office, full of hope and confidence, facing a new challenge.

I’ve locked myself in the office bathroom stall, silently (so it won’t be heard) swallowing sobs after a particularly challenging altercation.

I’ve hooted and jumped with joy alongside my team when we finally launched something that demanded everyone’s time, effort, and sleep for several months.

And most importantly, I know what it meant INSIDE.

It meant I was doing something important.

It meant I was helping those around me.

It meant I was contributing to the greater good.

Where’s your heart these days?

Who are you quietly showing up for?
